What does S4S mean on Instagram? And how to do it?

Ever since the inception of social media, things have changed drastically. Back in the day, apps like Instagram, and Facebook were not taken very seriously. However, things have taken a turn for good. A person who is unaware of current social media trends might not realize the importance of followers. If one was to say that followers on social media are no less than digital currency, it would not be an overstatement.

With the widespread reach of social media, brands, and small business owners finally realized the importance and potential of social media when it comes to business and marketing. Growth in social media is tantamount to the number of followers. Companies and small business owners realized it soon enough. And in order to increase the number of followers, they came up with many strategies, one of which is S4S. The S4S acronym, which you must have come across on Instagram, specifically on people’s bio stands for ‘shoutout for shoutout’. However, this is not the only interpretation involved. There are other interpretations as well. Some interpret it as ‘ support for support’ while some interpret it as ‘share for share’. Irrespective of the fact that what it really means, the purpose is exactly the same. S4S implies that two users enter into a mutual agreement, and both will post content that would support and leverage each other. In simpler words, one can say ‘ I will post content mentioning you and your brand, and you will post content mentioning me and my brand’.

How does S4S actually work?

If you are an avid user of Instagram and have followed fitness models, lifestyle coaches, mentors, and influencers, you might have noticed that their bio includes S4S. However, mention of S4S is not confined to their bio only, some of them even include it in their captions, bios, and hashtags as well.

The process for s4s usually involves two users which come to an agreement. The agreement involves giving each other a shoutout on their respective Instagram accounts. The primary purpose is to increase each other's reach and following so that each of the beneficiaries can reap the benefits of the increased following. The process usually involves sharing of photo or a video that features the other user's account. Aside from this, the individuals engaging in s4s encourage their followers to follow the featured account. It is to keep in mind that if both of the users have followers with high reach, their trick can help them gain quick followers.

For instance, assume that there is a fitness trainer on Instagram with a follower count of around 3500. This might seem like a lot of followers to someone who is unaware of social media dynamics, however, in reality, this follower count is the bare minimum. In ideal conditions, the user must search for another user in a similar niche with a more or less similar follower count. Let's assume that user 1 finds user 2 with a follower count of around 3900. This is an ideal condition for S2s proceedings.

To initiate the process, user 1 will have to contact user two. The contact can be established via any mode of communication. This includes email or Instagram direct messages. If terms and conditions are agreed upon then both of the users will have to post photos and videos which feature the other person's Id, brand, etc. Aside from this, they will also have to encourage their followers to check out another user's account.

Things to know:

There is no second opinion about the fact that the S4S technique actually works for users looking for some extra followers. However, one must also be aware of the fact that there are some limitations attached to it as well. For instance, there are some social media users who will only engage in S4S activity only if the follower count is the same. A little difference is okay. This might not be a problem for some, but it can be a problem for many.

For instance, let's assume there is a very popular account with a follower count of around 40,000. There is a very high possibility that the user may as well have written S4S 40k+ in their bio. This is usually done in order to make sure that users with followers count below the mentioned criteria do not approach S4S.

Does it really work?

To say that S4S does not yield any positive results is akin to underestimating its potential. In the real world, S4S trends have actually proven themselves. One does not need to have an Instagram account with a large follower count to utilize the S4S trend to their benefit. If your follower count is small, you should always start small. For instance, if you have 1000 followers, you should approach a user from a similar niche who also has a 1000 follower count. This way, you can actually help each other gain traction and followers.

All you have to do is to cast a friendly impression on your potential S4S user. If one is to say that S4S is all about making connections and showing interest in potential S4S users' growth, it would definitely not be an overstatement.

When it comes to increasing followers, the s4s trend speaks for itself. However, it is different for every user. Some have it easy, while some have to strive harder. For some, only one partnership is enough, while for others, it's not. They have to engage in two to three s4s partnerships before they reach their desired goal. At the end of the day, it all comes down to reaching out to accounts, making connections, and last but not least, publishing great content on your profile
